🦆 Muscovy Duck — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Birds · 1 varieties mapped

The quiet duck that hisses instead of quacks and eats your garden pests for free.

Muscovy ducks are large waterfowl, drakes 26-33 inches (66-84 cm) long and 10-15 lb (4.5-7 kg), ducks smaller at 6-8 lb, living 7-12 years. They are kept for insect control, eggs, meat, and as calm, personable backyard birds.

Unlike loud mallard derivatives, Muscovies are mostly silent (they hiss and puff). They are not 'pets you cuddle' but can be tame; they need secure housing from predators and, ideally, water to bathe in.

How long do Muscovy Ducks live?

Muscovy ducks commonly live 7-12 years with good care and predator protection.

What do Muscovy Ducks eat?

Feed a waterfowl or gamebird pellet (around 16% protein for maintenance) with greens, garden scraps, and insects; avoid bread, which is nutritionally empty, and never feed avocado or chocolate. Drakes need less protein than laying ducks. Fresh, clean water for drinking and bathing is essential.

Muscovy Duck housing and daily life

Provide a predator-proof coop with at least 4-6 sq ft per bird inside and secure outdoor run or free-range with a pond. Hardware cloth, not chicken wire, and a raccoon-proof latch are critical. They need water deep enough to submerge their heads to keep nostrils and eyes clean. Shelter from extremes; they tolerate cold better than heat.

Common mistakes with Muscovy Ducks

Top mistakes are weak predator protection (raccoons, dogs, foxes), no water to bathe in (leading to eye and foot problems), and feeding bread or junk food. Nonstick-fume exposure near indoor housing and lack of niacin-rich waterfowl feed (chick starter lacks niacin) are common health errors.
