🐟 Odessa Barb — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Fish & aquatic · 1 varieties mapped

A cool-water barb with a crimson flank that's calmer than its tiger cousin.

Odessa Barbs (Pethia padamya) are about 2.5 inches (6 cm), silvery with a dark spot and, in males, a striking red horizontal band along the flank. They are hardier and generally calmer than tiger barbs and tolerate cooler temperatures well.

They still appreciate a school and peaceful company. Their cooler tolerance makes them a good fit for rooms that dip below typical tropical ranges.

How long do Odessa Barbs live?

Odessa Barbs live 5 or more years with good care. Stable, cool-to-warm water and a balanced diet support a long life.

What do Odessa Barbs eat?

They take flake, pellets, and frozen/live foods like daphnia and bloodworms. Overfeeding is the main diet mistake; feed what is finished in two to three minutes.

Tank size and water parameters

A 20-gallon (75 L) tank or larger suits a school of 6. Target 64-74°F (18-23°C), pH 6.5-7.5, moderate hardness, zero ammonia and nitrite, nitrate under 30 ppm. Keep in groups of 6+; a longer tank with plants suits them.

Common mistakes with Odessa Barbs

Usual errors: too small a group, which can bring out nipping; too warm water for a cool-tolerant species; and boisterous or long-finned tank mates that stress them.
