🐟 Orfe — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Fish & aquatic · 2 varieties mapped

The silver torpedo of the pond — fast, schooling, and cold-hardy.

Orfe (Leuciscus idus) are slender, streamlined coldwater fish reaching 12-20 inches (30-50 cm), silvery with the golden orfe as a popular pond variant. They are active, schooling, surface-orientated fish that add constant motion to a garden pond.

They need large, well-oxygenated, unheated water and are not indoor tropical fish. They are social and best kept in a small school, and they appreciate depth and aeration.

How long do Orfe live?

Orfe live 10-15 or more years in good pond conditions. Cold, oxygen-rich, stable water and protection from predators support that long lifespan.

What do Orfe eat?

They are omnivores taking pond pellets, flakes and live/frozen foods like bloodworms and daphnia; they also take food from the surface. Overfeeding, especially in warm water, is the main mistake; feed what is finished in a few minutes.

Tank size and pond parameters

A large pond (hundreds of gallons, 1 m+ depth) suits a school. Target 50-72°F (10-22°C), pH 7.0-8.0, well-oxygenated, ammonia/nitrite zero, nitrate low via filtration. Keep in groups of 3+; provide aeration and predator cover.

Common mistakes with Orfe

Key errors: a small aquarium or tub (they need pond-scale space); warm stagnant water with low oxygen; keeping one (they are schooling); and overfeeding in summer.
