🐦 Owl Finch — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Birds · 1 varieties mapped

A tiny masked finch with an owlish face and a big appetite for company.

Owl finches (Bicheno's finch) are small mannikins about 4.5 inches (11 cm) long and 12-16 g, living 5-8 years in captivity. They are kept for their charming rounded head, social nature, and hardiness compared with Gouldians.

They are flock birds that must be kept in groups or pairs, are not hand-tamed, and do best in a planted flight cage with other gentle finches.

How long do Owl Finches live?

Owl finches typically live 5-8 years in captivity with good care.

What do Owl Finches eat?

Feed a quality small finch seed mix with daily greens, a little egg food, and cuttlebone; avoid avocado and chocolate. Fresh water daily. They are robust feeders but still need greens and calcium for breeding condition.

Owl Finch cage and daily life

Keep a pair or small flock in a flight cage at least 24 x 18 x 24 inches (60 x 45 x 60 cm), bar spacing 1/4-3/8 inch, with perches, a shallow bath, and shelter. They tolerate average room temperatures better than Gouldians but dislike drafts. Keep away from kitchens (Teflon/PTFE fumes are lethal).

Common mistakes with Owl Finches

Common errors are keeping one bird alone, too-wide bar spacing, and seed-only diets without greens. Nonstick-fume exposure and mixing with overly aggressive species are other routine issues.
