🦜 Pacific Parrotlet — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Birds · 1 varieties mapped

A parrot the size of your thumb with the ego of a macaw.

Pacific parrotlets are the smallest common companion parrots, about 4.5-5 inches (11-13 cm) long and 28-35 g, living 15-20 years (sometimes 30) in captivity. They are kept for their spunky, bold personality and manageable size.

Despite their size they can be nippy and territorial, and they need as much enrichment as a big parrot. They suit owners who want parrot behavior without a large cage, but the 15-30 year commitment still applies.

How long do Pacific Parrotlets live?

Pacific parrotlets commonly live 15-20 years, occasionally up to 30 in captivity with excellent care.

What do Pacific Parrotlets eat?

Feed about 60-70% pellets with vegetables, a little fruit, and a few seeds or millet as treats; avoid avocado, chocolate, caffeine, and alcohol. Keep fatty seeds under 10% of intake to prevent obesity.

Pacific Parrotlet cage and daily life

A single bird needs a cage at least 18 x 18 x 24 inches (45 x 45 x 60 cm) with 1/2 inch bar spacing, plus 2-3 hours out of the cage and toys. They are active and chewy despite their size; provide shreddable toys. Keep away from kitchens (Teflon/PTFE fumes are fatal).

Common mistakes with Pacific Parrotlets

Common errors are assuming small size means low effort (they need big-parrot enrichment), seed-heavy diets causing fatty liver, and underestimating the 15-30 year commitment. Nonstick-fume exposure and toxic foods are acute killers, and they can bond to one person and nip.
