🐢 Painted Turtle — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Reptiles & amphibians · 1 varieties mapped

The jewel of North American ponds — red-striped, hardy, and a classic basking turtle.

Painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) are 4-10 inch (10-25 cm) aquatic turtles across North America, recognized by their dark shells and red/yellow stripes. They are hardy, attractive basking pets.

The honest care: like sliders they need a large filtered tank, a basking dock with heat and UVB, and an omnivore diet. The same bowl-and-all-meat mistakes that kill sliders kill painted turtles.

How long do Painted Turtles live?

Painted turtles live 25-40 years (some to 50) and reach 4-10 inches (10-25 cm) depending on subspecies, females larger; adults weigh 0.3-1 kg.

What do Painted Turtles eat?

They are omnivores: aquatic turtle pellets, leafy greens, duckweed, and live/insects, fish, or shrimp. Feed juveniles daily-ish and adults every other day; dust with calcium. Avoid all-meat diets (kidney disease) and excessive processed protein. Provide plant matter throughout life, increasing with age.

Painted Turtle enclosure setup

Adults need a 75-gallon-plus aquarium with strong filtration, a dry basking platform, and a heat lamp to 85-90°F (29-32°C) over the dock. Water temperature 72-78°F (22-26°C) via heater; ambient 78-80°F (26-27°C). Strong UVB over the basking area is essential. Hatchlings need shallow, safe water with easy exit.

Common mistakes with Painted Turtles

Key errors: tiny tank (they grow and foul water fast), all-meat diet (kidney and shell disease), no UVB/basking (metabolic bone disease), and poor filtration (shell rot).
