Decades-long commitments with the intelligence of toddlers — noise, chewing and flock needs included.

Quick answer: Budgerigar is a variety of parrots & parakeets. Everything on this page is parrots & parakeets-level guidance — we do not invent variety-specific numbers.

The care below is parrots & parakeets-level guidance from our species hub, sourced to Merck Veterinary Manual — Bird Owners: Choosing & Caring for a Pet Bird and Merck Veterinary Manual — Providing a Home for a Bird. It applies to Budgerigar exactly as it applies to every other parrots & parakeets variety. We do not publish variety-specific temperament, lifespan or weight numbers that we cannot source.

Housing and daily life

The largest practical cage, heavy-duty toys rotated weekly (destruction is the job description), and out-of-cage time daily. Foraging toys turn feeding time into occupation — a bored parrot is a screaming, plucking parrot.

Diet

Pellets as the base (60–70%), vegetables, limited fruit and nuts by species. Seed-only diets cause the fatty-liver epidemic. Absolute no-list: avocado, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, high-salt foods — many are lethal in small doses.
