A pearly, pink-lined danio that catches the light in a planted school.
Pearl Danios (Danio albolineatus) reach about 2.5 inches (6 cm) with a translucent, iridescent body and a distinctive pink-to-red line along the side. They are peaceful, active schoolers closely related to zebras but a touch calmer and very attractive under light.
They are hardy and tolerant of a range of conditions, a good community mid-water fish that wants a school and a covered tank.
Pearl Danios live about 3-5 years with good care. Their hardiness makes them a reliable, long-term schooler.
What do Pearl Danios eat?
They take flake, micro-pellets, and small frozen/live foods like daphnia and brine shrimp. Overfeeding is the main diet error; feed small portions finished in two minutes.
Tank size and water parameters
A 15-20 gallon (57-75 L) tank suits a school of 6-8. Target 68-77°F (20-25°C), pH 6.0-7.0, soft to moderate water, zero ammonia and nitrite, nitrate under 30 ppm. Keep in groups of 6+; a secure lid prevents jumps.
Common mistakes with Pearl Danios
Usual errors: too small a group; an open tank (they jump); and boisterous or fin-nipping tank mates that stress a peaceful schooler.
Beginner mistakes to avoid
Keeping too few — pearls need 6+ to school confidently.
An uncovered tank — danios jump.
Rough tank mates — they are peaceful and easily outcompeted.
Overfeeding — keep portions small.
