Pigeons are doves — quiet, gentle and among the oldest domesticated birds.

Quick answer: Diamond dove is a variety of pigeons & doves. Everything on this page is pigeons & doves-level guidance — we do not invent variety-specific numbers.

The care below is pigeons & doves-level guidance from our species hub, sourced to Merck Veterinary Manual — Exotic & Laboratory Animals: Pet Birds and RSPCA — Dove and pigeon advice. It applies to Diamond dove exactly as it applies to every other pigeons & doves variety. We do not publish variety-specific temperament, lifespan or weight numbers that we cannot source.

Diet: seeds, grit and water depth

A quality pigeon/dove seed mix or small pellets, with grit offered separately (pigeons hull seeds whole and need it to grind — doves dehusk and need little), plus greens and a little egg food in molt and breeding. Water dishes must be deep enough for them to dip and drink in one motion — pigeons drink like horses, sucking rather than sipping, so 3–4 cm depth. Refresh daily; they foul water fast.

Lifespan and health

Well-kept pigeons live 12–15+ years, ringneck doves 10–15, diamond doves 8–12. Watch for canker (yellow plaques in the mouth — a common pigeon protozoal issue), feather lice (pinholes in feathers), and the pigeon-specific red flag: any labored, open-mouth breathing or a bird that puffs and stays fluffed needs an avian vet fast. Doves' chronic threat is egg-laying exhaustion in hens without mates — remove nest bowls if you are not breeding.
