🕷️ Pinktoe Tarantula — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Invertebrates · 1 varieties mapped

A tree-dwelling tarantula that wants height and airflow, not a wide shallow tub.

The Pinktoe Tarantula (Avicularia avicularia) is an arboreal species with a 4-5 inch leg span, dark legs and pink toe tips, that lives off the ground and spins open webs in captivity. Females live about 8-12 years and males only 2-4 years.

It is fragile and a fall can kill it, and it needs far more ventilation than a desert tarantula or it develops fatal respiratory problems. It is best for keepers who already understand tarantula basics rather than absolute first-timers.

How long do Pinktoe Tarantulas live?

Females live roughly 8-12 years and males 2-4 years after maturing. Because they are arboreal and skittish, most losses are from falls or poor ventilation rather than old age.

What do Pinktoe Tarantulas eat?

Feed adults small crickets or roaches every 7-10 days and keep a water dish or weekly misted leaves for drinking. Spiderlings take flightless fruit flies or pinhead crickets twice weekly.

Enclosure setup

Use a tall 10-20 gallon arboreal enclosure with vertical cork bark and twigs for webbing, plus cross-ventilation on at least two sides. Keep 75-82°F with 65-75% humidity and never seal the top, as stale air is deadly.

Common mistakes with Pinktoe Tarantulas

The worst errors are a terrestrial-style low tank with no climbing space, a poorly ventilated lid that causes fatal respiratory infections, over-misting that soaks the web, and letting the spider escape or fall during handling.
