The algae-eater everyone buys — and then outgrows. Most get far bigger than the pet store admits.

Quick answer: Clown pleco is a variety of plecos. Everything on this page is plecos-level guidance — we do not invent variety-specific numbers.

The care below is plecos-level guidance from our species hub, sourced to Merck Veterinary Manual — Aquarium and Pond Fish and RSPCA — Fish care. It applies to Clown pleco exactly as it applies to every other plecos variety. We do not publish variety-specific temperament, lifespan or weight numbers that we cannot source.

Diet: algae is not enough

Plecos need more than glass algae: sinking algae wafers, blanched zucchini/cucumber, and occasional protein. Wood (driftwood) is nibbled and helps digestion. Starved plecos rasp slime coats off tank mates. Feed at lights-out when they are active. Overfeeding pollutes; underfeeding starves.

The myth that hurts them

Buyers hear "plecos clean the tank" and skip water changes — wrong. They eat algae and add waste, raising the bioload. And the common pleco's adult size surprises everyone. Research the exact species' adult size before buying; a bristlenose or clown is the honest choice for most tanks.
