🦜 Princess Parrot — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Birds · 1 varieties mapped

The aristocrat of Australian parakeets: long-tailed, soft-spoken, and sweet-natured.

Princess parrots are slender Australian parakeets about 16-18 inches (40-46 cm) long including a long tail, weighing 100-140 g, living 15-20 years (up to 30) in captivity. They are kept for their refined looks and gentle, relatively quiet temperament.

They are more aviary-oriented than hands-on, doing best in a planted flight with a mate. They suit keepers wanting an elegant, calm parakeet with a long lifespan plan.

How long do Princess Parrots live?

Princess parrots commonly live 15-20 years, occasionally up to 30 in captivity with good care.

What do Princess Parrots eat?

Feed a mix of quality seed and pellets with daily greens, a little fruit, grass seed, and sprouted seed; avoid avocado, chocolate, caffeine, and alcohol. Balance seed with pellets and greens to prevent fatty liver from an all-seed diet.

Princess Parrot cage and daily life

Because of the long tail, provide a flight cage at least 36 x 24 x 36 inches (90 x 60 x 90 cm) with 1/2-5/8 inch bar spacing, plus 2-3 hours out of the cage and chew toys. They bathe often; keep away from kitchens (Teflon/PTFE fumes are fatal).

Common mistakes with Princess Parrots

Common errors are an all-seed diet causing fatty liver, nonstick-fume or toxic-food exposure, and too little flight space. Assuming they are hands-on companion parrots when they are naturally gentle aviary birds is also a mistake.
