🐸 Red-eyed Tree Frog — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Reptiles & amphibians · 1 varieties mapped

The poster-frog with ruby eyes — stunning, but fussy about humidity and strictly hands-off.

Red-eyed tree frogs (Agalychnis callidryas) are 2-3 inch (5-8 cm) vivid green, red-eyed frogs from Central American rainforests, among the most photographed amphibians. They are display animals for keepers who can hold high humidity.

The honest caveat: they are more delicate than White's, needing 70-90% humidity and stable warmth, and their skin is extremely sensitive — no handling. They are nocturnal and spend days sleeping on leaves.

How long do Red-eyed Tree Frogs live?

Red-eyed tree frogs live 5-10 years in captivity and reach 2-3 inches (5-8 cm), weighing 10-30 grams.

What do Red-eyed Tree Frogs eat?

They are insectivores: crickets, flies, moths, and small roaches, gut-loaded and dusted with calcium most feedings and a D3 multivitamin weekly. Feed adults every 2-3 days and juveniles daily; prey no wider than the head. No vegetation or wild-caught insects (pesticide risk).

Red-eyed Tree Frog enclosure setup

A tall planted terrarium (20-30 gallons, 18x18x24 inches / 45x45x60 cm) with broad leaves for resting, branches, and a shallow water dish suits a small group. Keep 75-82°F (24-28°C); nights drop to 68-72°F (20-22°C). Humidity must be 70-90% with regular misting and good ventilation to avoid mold. A low UVB (5% T5 or LED) is beneficial. Secure lid required.

Common mistakes with Red-eyed Tree Frogs

Key errors: humidity below 70% (dehydration, stuck sheds), handling (fragile, sensitive skin), poor ventilation with high humidity (mold and bacterial infection), and too much UVB/light (stress).
