🐢 Red-footed Tortoise — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Reptiles & amphibians · 1 varieties mapped

The red-legged rainforest tortoise — fruit-friendly, humid-loving, and more social than most.

Red-footed tortoises (Chelonoidis carbonarius) are 10-16 inch (25-40 cm), 10-20 kg South American tortoises with red/orange leg scales, kept for their color and relatively outgoing nature. Unlike Mediterranean species they tolerate some fruit and humidity.

The honest note: they are tropical and need warmth and humidity (60-80%) — keep them dry and they fail. Their diet includes more fruit and even some protein than desert tortoises, but balance still matters.

How long do Red-footed Tortoises live?

Red-footed tortoises live 40-60 years (some to 90) and reach 10-16 inches (25-40 cm) shell length, weighing 10-20 kg, females often larger.

What do Red-footed Tortoises eat?

They are omnivorous herbivores-leaning: leafy greens, flowers, fruits (moderate), and some protein such as fungi, insects, or occasional lean meat. Feed a daily varied diet; dust with calcium several times weekly (D3 if no sun). Avoid too much fruit/sugar and too much protein (kidney strain). Always provide fresh water.

Red-footed Tortoise enclosure setup

Keep warm and humid: basking spot 90-95°F (32-35°C), ambient 80-85°F (27-29°C), cool end near 78°F (26°C). Strong UVB (10-12% T5) is required. Humidity 60-80% with misting and a moist substrate; provide a hide, shallow water, and outdoor access in warm climates. Nights can drop to 72°F (22°C).

Common mistakes with Red-footed Tortoises

Key errors: too dry (shell and eye problems), too much fruit/protein (kidney and gut disease), no UVB/calcium (MBD), and cold (respiratory infection).
