🦜 Red-rumped Parrot — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Birds · 1 varieties mapped

The Aussie parakeet that prefers grazing on the aviary floor to constant screaming.

Red-rumped parrots are slim Australian parakeets about 10-12 inches (26-30 cm) long and 70-100 g, living 15-25 years in captivity. They are kept for their gentle temperament and the male's green-and-red plumage.

They are more ground-foraging and less handleable than companion parrots, doing best in a planted aviary or large flight cage with a mate. Good for aviary keepers seeking a calm, attractive species.

How long do Red-rumped Parrots live?

Red-rumped parrots commonly live 15-25 years in captivity with good care.

What do Red-rumped Parrots eat?

Feed a mix of quality seed and pellets with daily greens, grass heads, a little fruit, and sprouted seed; avoid avocado, chocolate, caffeine, and alcohol. They naturally eat grass seed, so balance seed with pellets and greens to avoid fatty liver.

Red-rumped Parrot cage and daily life

Provide a flight cage at least 36 x 24 x 36 inches (90 x 60 x 90 cm) with 1/2-5/8 inch bar spacing, a flat perch or shelf, and floor space for foraging; plus 2-3 hours out of the cage. They enjoy bathing; keep away from kitchens (Teflon/PTFE fumes are fatal).

Common mistakes with Red-rumped Parrots

Common errors are an all-seed diet causing fatty liver, nonstick-fume or toxic-food exposure, and too little flight/foraging space. Assuming they are hands-on pets when they are naturally aviary birds is also a mistake.
