🐟 Red-tailed Shark — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Fish & aquatic · 1 varieties mapped

The black body, red torch tail — and a mean streak you must plan for.

Red-tailed Sharks (Epalzeorhynchos bicolor) are 4-6 inches (10-15 cm), mostly black with a vivid red tail fin. They are striking but territorial bottom-dwellers that typically must be kept one per tank, as they attack their own kind and similar-looking fish.

They are not true sharks (they are cyprinids) and need a larger tank with hiding spots and robust tank mates. Their numbers in the wild are threatened, so buy captive-bred stock.

How long do Red-tailed Sharks live?

Red-tailed Sharks live about 5-8 years with good care. Stable water and the right social setup (alone) support a long life.

What do Red-tailed Sharks eat?

They are omnivores taking pellets, flake, algae wafers, and frozen/live foods. Overfeeding is the main diet error; they also graze algae. Feed moderate portions once or twice daily.

Tank size and water parameters

A 40-gallon (150 L) tank suits a single fish. Target 72-79°F (22-26°C), pH 6.5-7.5, moderate hardness, zero ammonia and nitrite, nitrate under 20-30 ppm. Keep only one per tank with caves and robust, non-similar tank mates.

Common mistakes with Red-tailed Sharks

Key errors: two in one tank (they fight viciously); similar-looking tank mates like rainbow sharks they attack; too small a tank; and timid tank mates they bully.
