🪲 Rhino Beetle — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Invertebrates · 1 varieties mapped

A horned tank of a beetle that can lift 100 times its weight but lives only months as an adult.

Rhino Beetles such as the Hercules Beetle (Dynastes hercules) reach 2-6 inches including the horn and are among the strongest animals on Earth by weight. Adults live just 3-6 months, while the larva develops for 1-2 years.

They are harmless, can be handled, and are popular with kids, but adults fly and climb powerfully and the larvae need carefully fermented flake soil. They are a project pet because of the long grub stage.

Rhino Beetle

How long do Rhino Beetles live?

Adults live about 3-6 months, and the larval stage lasts 1-2 years in captivity before pupation. The short adult life is normal, not a care failure.

What do Rhino Beetles eat?

Adults eat beetle jelly, banana, and other soft fruit 2-3 times weekly; larvae eat fermented flake soil or rotten wood. Provide jelly in a dish and replace it before it spoils.

Enclosure setup

Adults need a 10 gallon tank with branches to climb and 72-80°F. Larvae require a deep container of flake soil kept dark, lightly moist, and at steady warmth; avoid sealing it airtight.

Common mistakes with Rhino Beetles

Usual errors are skipping the fermented flake soil (plain dirt starves the larva), overheating the grub, a lid left ajar so the strong adult flies off, and condensation that drowns the pupa.
