🦜 Rosella — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Birds · 3 varieties mapped

A living stained-glass window that prefers watching to handling.

Rosellas are medium Australian parakeets, 10-14 inches (25-36 cm) long and 110-170 g, living 15-25 years in captivity. They are kept for their spectacular plumage and active, entertaining aviary behavior.

Rosellas are generally not hands-on pets; they are often nippy and prefer flight to cuddling, so they suit a planted aviary or large flight cage rather than a tame companion role. They need room to fly and a low-stress, bird-focused setup.

How long do Rosellas live?

Rosellas typically live 15-25 years in captivity with proper care and a good diet.

What do Rosellas eat?

Feed a quality small-parrot seed mix softened with pellets, plus daily vegetables, a little fruit, and sprouted seed. Avoid avocado, chocolate, and caffeine. Like many seed-eating parakeets, rosellas are prone to fatty liver on an all-seed diet, so keep seed to roughly half the intake and add greens.

Rosella cage and daily life

Rosellas need horizontal flight space: a minimum of about 36 x 24 x 36 inches (90 x 60 x 90 cm) for one, larger if you can. Bar spacing around 1/2-5/8 inch. They are active flyers and do best in an aviary with natural branches and a shallow bath. Keep away from kitchens (Teflon/PTFE fumes are lethal).

Common mistakes with Rosellas

Common errors are an all-seed diet causing fatty liver, keeping them in a small cage with no flight (leading to stress and feather-plucking), and expecting a tame, handleable pet when rosellas are naturally hands-off. Nonstick-fume exposure and toxic foods are the acute killers.
