🐟 Rosy Barb — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Fish & aquatic · 2 varieties mapped

The cold-tolerant barb that stays active when tropical tanks would slow down.

Rosy Barbs (Pethia conchonius) are larger barbs, reaching 4-6 inches (10-15 cm), with a rosy sheen that intensifies in males. They are hardy, active, and notably more tolerant of cooler water than most tropical fish, which makes them flexible for unheated or cooler rooms.

Like their relatives they are nippy in small groups, so a proper school is the key to peaceful behavior. They are too big and boisterous for tiny nano tanks.

How long do Rosy Barbs live?

Rosy Barbs live 5 or more years with good care. Their hardiness and cooler tolerance make them dependable long-term fish.

What do Rosy Barbs eat?

They are omnivores taking flake, pellets, and frozen/live foods like bloodworms and daphnia. Overfeeding is the main diet error; feed what is finished in two to three minutes.

Tank size and water parameters

A 30-gallon (115 L) tank or larger suits a school of 6. Target 64-77°F (18-25°C), pH 6.0-7.0, moderate hardness, zero ammonia and nitrite, nitrate under 30 ppm. Keep in groups of 6+; the golden rosy barb is a popular color morph.

Common mistakes with Rosy Barbs

Key errors: too small a group, which brings out fin-nipping; too small a tank for a 4-6 inch active fish; and housing with long-finned or tiny tank mates they can harass or outcompete.
