🐟 Rosy Red Minnow — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Fish & aquatic · 1 varieties mapped

The penny-priced minnow that survives where fussier fish fail.

Rosy Red Minnows (Pimephales promelas, a golden color morph of the fathead minnow) are 2-3 inches (5-7.5 cm), pinkish-gold, and extremely hardy coldwater fish. They are often sold as feeders but make fine, tough pets in cool aquariums and ponds.

They tolerate a wide range of conditions and temperatures, which makes them a great beginner or pond fish — but they still need clean, oxygenated water and are social, so keep a group.

How long do Rosy Red Minnows live?

Rosy Red Minnows live about 2-4 years with good care, sometimes longer in ponds. Their hardiness means they persist through conditions that kill tropicals.

What do Rosy Red Minnows eat?

They are omnivores taking flake, pellets, and frozen/live foods, plus algae. Overfeeding is the main diet error; feed moderate portions. They are unfussy and easy to feed.

Tank size and water parameters

A 10-20 gallon (38-75 L) tank or pond suits a group. Target 50-78°F (10-26°C), pH 6.0-8.0, moderate hardness, zero ammonia and nitrite, nitrate under 30 ppm. Keep in groups of 5+; they are coldwater fish that need cool, oxygenated water.

Common mistakes with Rosy Red Minnows

Key errors: warm stagnant tropical conditions (they prefer cool, oxygen-rich water); too small a group; poor filtration despite their hardiness; and confusing them with tropical fish that need heat.
