🦜 Senegal Parrot — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Birds · 1 varieties mapped

The 'quiet' parrot: small, sturdy, and full of attitude without the Amazon decibel level.

Senegal parrots are small stocky parrots about 9-10 inches (23-25 cm) long and 120-170 g, living 25-50 years in captivity. They are kept for their manageable size, relatively low noise, and confident, entertaining temperament.

Senegals can bond hard to one person and show seasonal nippiness, and like all parrots they need consistent socialization and enrichment. They are a good 'first real parrot' for owners who want personality without a giant cage, but the 25-50 year commitment still applies.

How long do Senegal Parrots live?

Senegals commonly live 25-50 years in captivity, with good care, so they are a multi-decade commitment.

What do Senegal Parrots eat?

Feed about 60-70% pelleted food, with vegetables, a little fruit, and a few nuts or seeds as treats. Avoid avocado, chocolate, caffeine, and alcohol. Keep fatty seeds and nuts under 10% of the diet to prevent obesity and fatty liver.

Senegal Parrot cage and daily life

A single bird needs a cage at least 24 x 24 x 36 inches (60 x 60 x 90 cm) with 5/8-3/4 inch bar spacing, plus 2-3 hours of out-of-cage time and chew/foraging toys. Senegals are less noisy than Amazons but still vocal; keep the cage away from kitchens because Teflon/PTFE fumes are lethal.

Common mistakes with Senegal Parrots

Common errors are a seed-only diet causing fatty liver, Teflon/aerosol fume exposure, and underestimating the 25-50 year lifespan leading to impulse buys and rehoming. Letting the bird bond exclusively to one person without gentle socialization of others can also fuel jealousy and biting.
