Merino Sheep — Variety Guide
Merino — one of the sheep varieties owners search for by name.
Merino is one of the sheep varieties people look up by name. This page answers the questions owners actually type about merino, then points you to the sourced sheep care guidance that applies to every variety.
Flock animals judged as much by fleece and grazing habits as by breed.
Quick answer: Merino is a variety of sheep. Everything on this page is sheep-level guidance — we do not invent variety-specific numbers.
The care below is sheep-level guidance from our species hub, sourced to Merck Veterinary Manual — Sheep Owners and RSPCA — Sheep advice. It applies to Merino exactly as it applies to every other sheep variety. We do not publish variety-specific temperament, lifespan or weight numbers that we cannot source.
Parasites: the FAMACHA habit
Haemonchus (barber-pole worm) is the modern shepherd's main opponent: it sucks blood, and the skill that saves sheep is the FAMACHA eye-score — checking inner-eyelid color weekly in grazing season and deworming only anemic animals (selective deworming slows drug resistance). Combine with rotational grazing, avoid overgrazing below 8 cm sward height, and quarantine-drench any new sheep before it joins the flock. Runny noses, coughing and weight loss despite eating get a vet visit.
Lambing, shearing and the calendar
Lambing season is the annual crunch: ewes due roughly 5 months after breeding, mostly at 2 a.m., needing dry pens, colostrum on hand, and a calm shepherd who knows when to watch and when to intervene (a ewe pushing 30+ minutes with no progress is the classic call-the-vet line). Wool breeds shear once a year before summer; hoof trims every couple of months. If you cannot commit to lambing-season availability, buy wethers or non-breeding ewes — pet flocks without lambs skip the hardest week of the year.
