🐦 Society Finch — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Birds · 1 varieties mapped

The friendly, easygoing finch that gets along with everyone, including your other finches.

Society finches (Bengalese finches) are small domestic finches about 4-5 inches (11-13 cm) long and 15-25 g, living 4-7 years in captivity. They are kept for their calm, social nature and because they make excellent foster parents for eggs of other finch species.

Like all finches they are flock birds that must be kept in pairs or groups and are not hand-tamed. They are among the easiest finches for beginners.

Society Finch

How long do Society Finches live?

Society finches typically live 4-7 years in captivity with good care.

What do Society Finches eat?

Feed a quality small-seed mix with daily greens, a little egg food, and cuttlebone for calcium; avoid avocado and chocolate. Fresh water and a clean dish daily are essential. They do not need grit, which can cause impaction if overused.

Society Finch cage and daily life

A pair needs a cage at least 18 x 18 x 24 inches (45 x 45 x 60 cm), wider better, with 1/4-3/8 inch bar spacing. Provide multiple perches, nests, a shallow bath, and companionship. Keep away from kitchens (Teflon/PTFE fumes are lethal). A planted flight cage brings out their best behavior.

Common mistakes with Society Finches

Common errors are keeping one bird alone, too-wide bar spacing, and seed-only diets without greens. Nonstick-fume exposure and overcrowding that sparks squabbles are other routine problems.
