🐀 Spiny Mouse — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Companion mammals · 1 varieties mapped

A petite, spiky-coated desert mouse that thrives in groups.

Spiny mice (genus Acomys, such as the Egyptian spiny mouse) are small rodents 8-12 cm (3-5 in) long with a weight of about 20-50 g, named for the stiff, spiny guard hairs over a soft undercoat. They are social and best kept in same-sex pairs or small colonies, and they are unusual among mammals in their ability to autonomously shed and regrow tail skin and even parts of the tail (caudal autotomy).

They are desert animals that need warm, dry conditions and are not as hardy in cold or humid homes. They are active and curious but delicate, so they suit experienced small-mammal keepers rather than beginners or young children.

How long do Spiny Mice live?

Spiny mice generally live 3-5 years in captivity with good husbandry.

What do Spiny Mice eat?

Feed a base of quality seed and grain mix formulated for mice/gerbils, supplemented with small amounts of leafy greens, chopped vegetables, and occasional insects (mealworms) for protein. Do NOT feed them citrus, garlic/onion, chocolate, or excess fatty seeds, and avoid sugary treats that promote obesity.

Housing and space

House groups in a secure, well-ventilated tank or cage of at least 60 x 30 cm floor area for a pair, with a deep layer of sand-based substrate for digging and a warm spot. Maintain roughly 22-28°C (72-82°F) and low humidity; substrate should stay dry. Provide hides and a solid-surface wheel, as their tails are fragile.

Common mistakes with Spiny Mice

Key mistakes are keeping them in cold or damp conditions, housing aggressive mixed groups that cause tail injuries, using wire-floor or running-wheel surfaces that damage their delicate tails, and overfeeding fatty seed mixes leading to obesity and heat stress.
