🐍 Spotted Python — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Reptiles & amphibians · 1 varieties mapped

The spotted little Aussie python — compact, pretty, and one of the easiest pythons.

Spotted pythons (Antaresia maculosa) are 3-4 foot (90-120 cm) pythons from Australia, close relatives of children's pythons, kept for their manageable size, spotted pattern, and hardy nature. They are excellent beginner pythons.

The honest note: they are nocturnal, need a proper heat gradient and dry Australian conditions, eat only frozen-thawed rodents, and are escape-prone — a secure lid matters.

How long do Spotted Pythons live?

Spotted pythons live 15-20 years and reach 3-4 feet (90-120 cm), typically 200-500 grams as adults.

What do Spotted Pythons eat?

They eat frozen-thawed mice: pinkies/fuzzies for juveniles, adult mice for large snakes. Feed juveniles every 5-7 days and adults every 7-14 days, one prey item no wider than the body. Never feed live prey; no insects or plants.

Spotted Python enclosure setup

An adult needs a 20-gallon long terrarium with a branch and a secure lid. Provide a warm side of 80-88°F (27-31°C), a cool side of 75-78°F (24-26°C), and a night drop to 70°F (21°C). Humidity 40-60% with a water bowl and humid hide. UVB is optional. Supply two hides.

Common mistakes with Spotted Pythons

Typical errors: too-cold enclosure (refusal to eat), live feeding (injury), too small a tank for an active snake, and a lid that is not secure (escape risk).
