How long do Starlings live?
In captivity starlings commonly live 5-15 years, occasionally up to 20 with excellent care, far longer than their wild average.
What do Starlings eat?
Feed a balanced softbill diet: high-protein insectivore or soaked dog/cat kibble, live insects (mealworms), fruit, and some cooked egg, plus limited seed. Avoid avocado, chocolate, caffeine, and salt. They need animal protein and varied foods, not an all-seed mix. Fresh water for drinking and bathing daily.
Starling cage and daily life
Provide a cage at least 24 x 24 x 36 inches (60 x 60 x 90 cm) with several perches and out-of-cage time, plus lots of enrichment and social interaction. Starlings are intelligent and destructive, so rotate toys and offer foraging. Keep away from kitchens (Teflon/PTFE fumes are lethal) and provide a bath often.
Common mistakes with Starlings
Top mistakes are feeding an all-seed or all-fruit diet lacking protein (leading to deficiency), underestimating their need for daily interaction (causing behavioral problems), and nonstick-fume or toxic-food exposure. Releasing a captive starling is both illegal and a death sentence for a human-imprinted bird.
Beginner mistakes to avoid
- Feeding seed or fruit only without insect protein, causing nutritional deficiency.
- Underestimating their need for daily interaction and enrichment, causing behavioral issues.
- Exposing the bird to Teflon/PTFE fumes or toxic foods like avocado and chocolate.
- Releasing a captive starling, which is illegal and fatal for an imprinted bird.
