🐍 Western Hognose Snake — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Reptiles & amphibians · 1 varieties mapped

The drama-queen snake with an upturned snout — plays dead, flattens up, and is basically harmless.

Western hognose snakes (Heterodon nasicus) are 14-36 inch (35-90 cm) rear-fanged colubrids from central North America, beloved for their comical defensive displays (hissing, flattening, playing dead) and mild, non-threatening nature. They are quirky beginner-to-Intermediate snakes.

The honest note: they are sometimes reluctant feeders (especially on mice), and many must be scented or started on toads/reptilinks — force-feeding stresses them. They are mildly venomous (rear-fanged, harmless to humans) and must never be cohabited.

How long do Western Hognose Snakes live?

Western hognose snakes live 12-18 years and reach 14-36 inches (35-90 cm), females larger; adults weigh 100-500 grams.

What do Western Hognose Snakes eat?

They are carnivorous: frozen-thawed mice are the goal, but many prefer (or must start on) scenting with toad, frog, or using reptilinks. Feed juveniles every 5-7 days and adults every 7-14 days, one prey item no wider than the neck. Never feed live prey. Some individuals are chronic feeders; avoid force-feeding, which causes severe stress.

Western Hognose Snake enclosure setup

An adult needs a 20-gallon long terrarium with a sandy-aspen substrate for burrowing and a secure lid. Provide a warm side of 85-90°F (29-32°C), a cool side of 75-78°F (24-26°C), and a night drop to 70°F (21°C). Humidity 30-50% with a humid hide for sheds. UVB is optional. They burrow, so provide depth and hides.

Common mistakes with Western Hognose Snakes

Common errors: chronic overfeeding (obesity — they beg but should be fed on schedule), using live prey, humidity too high (scale rot in a dry species), and force-feeding reluctant feeders (stress and injury).
