🐢 Yellow-footed Tortoise — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Reptiles & amphibians · 1 varieties mapped

The bigger, yellow-scaled cousin of the red-foot — forest-dwelling, humid, and long-lived.

Yellow-footed tortoises (Chelonoidis denticulatus) are 12-20 inch (30-50 cm), 10-25 kg South American forest tortoises, larger than red-foots and with yellow leg markings. They are impressive, humid-climate tortoises.

The honest requirement: like red-foots they are tropical and need 70-90% humidity and warmth; kept dry they decline. Their diet includes fruit and some protein but must stay balanced.

How long do Yellow-footed Tortoises live?

Yellow-footed tortoises live 40-60+ years and reach 12-20 inches (30-50 cm) shell length, weighing 10-25 kg, with females often larger.

What do Yellow-footed Tortoises eat?

They are omnivorous: leafy greens, flowers, fruits (moderate), fungi, and some animal protein (insects, occasional lean meat). Feed a daily varied diet; dust with calcium several times weekly (D3 if no sun). Avoid excess fruit/sugar and excess protein (kidney strain). Provide fresh water always.

Yellow-footed Tortoise enclosure setup

Keep warm and humid: basking spot 88-92°F (31-33°C), ambient 80-85°F (27-29°C), cool end near 78°F (26°C). Strong UVB (10-12% T5) is required. Humidity 70-90% with misting and moist substrate; provide a hide and shallow water. Nights drop to 72°F (22°C). Outdoor access in tropical climates only.

Common mistakes with Yellow-footed Tortoises

Key errors: too dry (shell and eye disease), excess fruit/protein (kidney/gut disease), no UVB/calcium (MBD), and cold (respiratory infection).
