🐦 Zebra Finch — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Birds · 1 varieties mapped

The perfect first bird: small, cheap to keep, and happiest in a noisy little flock.

Zebra finches are among the smallest common cage birds, about 4 inches (10 cm) long and 12-18 g, living 3-5 years typically (sometimes 7+). They are kept for their low cost, hardiness, and amusing social behavior; they are look-and-listen pets that almost never tame to the hand.

They must be kept in pairs or groups, never alone, and they breed readily even in small cages. They are ideal for beginners who want birds they watch rather than handle.

How long do Zebra Finches live?

Zebra finches typically live 3-5 years, occasionally 7 or more with excellent care, a shorter lifespan than parrots but longer than many small rodents.

What do Zebra Finches eat?

Feed a quality small-seed mix (millet-based) as a base, plus daily small amounts of greens (chopped kale, lettuce), a bit of egg food, and grit-free cuttlebone for calcium. Avoid avocado and chocolate. Do not add grit unnecessarily, as it can cause impaction; fresh water daily is essential.

Zebra Finch cage and daily life

A pair needs a cage at least 18 x 18 x 24 inches (45 x 45 x 60 cm), wider is better, with bar spacing about 1/4-3/8 inch. Provide multiple perches, a shallow bath two or three times weekly, and company, never a solitary bird. Keep away from kitchens (Teflon/PTFE fumes are lethal). Zebra finches do not need out-of-cage handling but benefit from a flight cage.

Common mistakes with Zebra Finches

Top mistakes are keeping a single finch (chronic stress), wrong bar spacing that traps heads, and seed-only diets without greens leading to deficiency. Nonstick-fume exposure and letting pairs breed endlessly without rest (exhausting hens) are common killers.
