Wires first
The single most common rabbit emergency at home is a chewed power cord. Baseboard-level wiring must be covered or routed out of reach — HRS calls rabbit-proofing a precondition, not an option.
Plants: never assume instinct
People believe rabbits instinctively avoid poisonous plants. HRS's founders watched a rabbit munch oleander — they do not. Identify every house plant and remove toxic ones; keep the food A–Z list as your reference for what is safe to feed, not what is safe to chew.
Outdoors: predators and heat
Most predators hunt at night — HRS recommends bringing outdoor rabbits in every evening. Heat is the other killer: rabbits cannot sweat effectively, so shade and ventilation are not optional in warm weather.
Synthetic materials
Carpet fibers, plastic and treated wood can cause intestinal blockages when chewed. Provide safe alternatives (hay, cardboard, untreated wood) so the chewing instinct lands somewhere harmless.
