Angelfish is one of the cichlids varieties people search for by name. This page covers what owners actually ask about it, then hands you the sourced cichlids care guidance that applies to every variety.

The most diverse aquarium fish family — brilliant, brainy, and belligerent. Tank mates are a chess game.

Quick answer: Angelfish is a variety of cichlids. Everything on this page is cichlids-level guidance — we do not invent variety-specific numbers.

The care below is cichlids-level guidance from our species hub, sourced to Merck Veterinary Manual — Aquarium and Pond Fish and RSPCA — Fish care. It applies to Angelfish exactly as it applies to every other cichlids variety. We do not publish variety-specific temperament, lifespan or weight numbers that we cannot source.

How long do cichlids live

Smaller rift-lake cichlids live 5–8 years; oscars and other large Americans reach 10–15. Lifespan tracks water quality and diet. The classic killers are poor filtration (ammonia burns gills), aggression injuries left untreated, and "ich" (white-spot) outbreaks in stressed fish. Stable parameters beat fancy equipment.

Tank size and the aggression rule

Over-filter and over-space: a 55-gal (210 L) tank is a starting point for a small African community; oscars need 75 gal (285 L) each as adults. Use rockwork with sight breaks so fish can claim territories and avoid each other. Never mix a mild species with a known murderer. Quarantine every new fish 4 weeks.
