The most diverse aquarium fish family — brilliant, brainy, and belligerent. Tank mates are a chess game.
Quick answer: Convict cichlid is a variety of cichlids. Everything on this page is cichlids-level guidance — we do not invent variety-specific numbers.
The care below is cichlids-level guidance from our species hub, sourced to Merck Veterinary Manual — Aquarium and Pond Fish and RSPCA — Fish care. It applies to Convict cichlid exactly as it applies to every other cichlids variety. We do not publish variety-specific temperament, lifespan or weight numbers that we cannot source.
Tank size and the aggression rule
Over-filter and over-space: a 55-gal (210 L) tank is a starting point for a small African community; oscars need 75 gal (285 L) each as adults. Use rockwork with sight breaks so fish can claim territories and avoid each other. Never mix a mild species with a known murderer. Quarantine every new fish 4 weeks.
Water chemistry by origin
This is the non-negotiable: African rift-lake cichlids need hard, alkaline water (pH 7.8–8.6); most South American cichlids want soft, slightly acidic (pH 6.0–7.0). Matching origin chemistry prevents chronic stress and disease. Test weekly with a liquid kit — strip tests lie. Frequent small water changes (30–50% weekly) keep nitrates low.
