Call is one of the ducks varieties people look up by name. This page answers the questions owners actually type about call, then points you to the sourced ducks care guidance that applies to every variety.

Hardier than chickens in wet climates, with different housing and water needs.

Quick answer: Call is a variety of ducks. Everything on this page is ducks-level guidance — we do not invent variety-specific numbers.

The care below is ducks-level guidance from our species hub, sourced to Merck Veterinary Manual — Poultry and RSPCA — Duck advice. It applies to Call exactly as it applies to every other ducks variety. We do not publish variety-specific temperament, lifespan or weight numbers that we cannot source.

Feeding: niacin is the duckling emergency

Adults thrive on waterfowl or all-flock pellet (16–18% protein) plus forage; layer feed only if they are laying heavily. The classic failure is ducklings raised on chick feed without extra niacin — growing legs go weak and bendy. Fix it with brewer's yeast sprinkled on feed from hatch to 10 weeks. Ducks also swallow everything: keep string, foam pellets and small toys out of their water.

Lifespan, health and the muddy-truth

Domestic ducks commonly live 8–12 years, Muscovies sometimes longer. Watch for bumblefoot (a hard swelling on the foot pad, usually from rough, wet ground), wet feather (when preen oil fails and down soaks — often from dirty water), and egg binding in heavy layers. The honest budget line: ducks multiply your cleanup. Bedding refreshes weekly, water refreshes daily, and the mud season never really ends — plan the pen on a slope with drainage.
