Water: how much do ducks really need?
Ducks must be able to submerge their heads to clear nostrils and eyes — that is the non-negotiable. A deep bucket or trough works; a pond or kiddie pool is luxury. The catch: they muddy and foul water fast, so plan to refresh daily and site water away from the coop door to limit mud. In winter, water dishes freeze — a heated dog-water bowl solves it. Never keep ducklings with deep water unsupervised; they can saturate and chill before they feather up.
Housing and space
Simple shelter beats fancy: a draft-free, well-ventilated house with deep straw bedding at roughly 0.5 m² (5 sq ft) per bird inside, plus a secure run of 2–3 m² per bird or supervised free range. Ducks do not need perches or nest boxes — a straw corner is a nest. They are cold-hardy to well below freezing but hate heat; shade and water to dip in matter more in summer than any insulation in winter. Night security matters: foxes, raccoons and owls all take ducks.
