Lifespan, health and water quality

25–35 years is normal in good ponds. The diseases that kill koi are almost all water problems first: ammonia burn, nitrite poisoning, and koi herpesvirus (deadly and contagious — quarantine any new fish 4–6 weeks in a separate tank before it joins the pond). Watch for flashing (rubbing on rocks — usually parasites), ulcers, and clamped fins. Herons and raccoons are the other top cause of loss; netting or a motion-protected deep zone saves fish.

Winter and the oxygen question

Koi overwinter under ice fine if the pond has a meter of unfrozen, aerated depth — use a de-icer or air stone to keep a hole open; do not smash ice (shock waves injure fish) and do not run waterfalls in freezing weather (they supercool the pond). In summer, oxygen is the hidden limit: warm water holds less O₂ while koi need more — an air pump in July prevents the gasping-at-dawn emergency. Plants shade and help, but aeration does the work.
