Feeding: seasonal, not constant

Feed a quality koi pellet in warm months, what they finish in 3–5 minutes, once or twice daily; add treats — watermelon, lettuce, shrimp. Below about 10°C (50°F) water, stop feeding: cold gut bacteria cannot process food and autumn meals become winter deaths. Wheat-germ-based food is gentler in spring and autumn. Never feed bread. In a planted, algae-rich pond, well-fed koi can skip days without harm.

Lifespan, health and water quality

25–35 years is normal in good ponds. The diseases that kill koi are almost all water problems first: ammonia burn, nitrite poisoning, and koi herpesvirus (deadly and contagious — quarantine any new fish 4–6 weeks in a separate tank before it joins the pond). Watch for flashing (rubbing on rocks — usually parasites), ulcers, and clamped fins. Herons and raccoons are the other top cause of loss; netting or a motion-protected deep zone saves fish.
