🦎 Fire Salamander — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Reptiles & amphibians · 1 varieties mapped

The black-and-gold European classic — bold-looking, cool-loving, and toxic if mishandled.

Fire salamanders (Salamandra salamandra) are 6-12 inch (15-30 cm) boldly black-and-yellow terrestrial salamanders from Europe, long kept for their beauty and calm demeanor. They are terrestrial as adults, returning to water only to breed.

The honest red lines: they are COOL-climate animals (ideal 55-70°F / 13-21°C) and cook in warm rooms; their skin secretes toxins, so never handle casually and wash hands after. They need a moist, half-terrestrial setup with dechlorinated water.

How long do Fire Salamanders live?

Fire salamanders live 10-20+ years (some to 30) and reach 6-12 inches (15-30 cm) in length, weighing 50-150 grams.

What do Fire Salamanders eat?

They are invertebrate carnivores: earthworms, crickets, slugs, and other small invertebrates, dusted with calcium. Feed every 2-3 days for adults and daily for juveniles; prey sized to the head. No vegetation or fish. Avoid wild-caught insects (pesticides).

Fire Salamander enclosure setup

A 20-30 gallon terrestrial setup with a moisture-retentive substrate (soil/coco with moss), hiding caves, and a shallow dechlorinated water dish suits 1-2. Keep COOL: 55-70°F (13-21°C); they must not exceed ~75°F (24°C). Humidity 70-90% with misting. Low UVB (5% T5 or LED) is optional. Provide a cool, dark retreat and secure lid.

Common mistakes with Fire Salamanders

Critical errors: a warm tank (they are cool-climate and overheat), dry substrate (skin desiccation), handling (toxic skin secretions — wash hands), and untreated tap water.
