🐟 Jewel Cichlid — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Fish & aquatic · 1 varieties mapped

The ruby-spangled cichlid that turns ferocious the moment it spawns.

Jewel Cichlids (Hemichromis bimaculatus and relatives) are 4-6 inches (10-15 cm), glittering red with blue spots, and genuinely beautiful. They are, however, aggressive — especially a breeding pair, which will clear a tank of anything that moves.

They suit a species tank or very robust West African biotope setups. Beginners expecting a colorful community fish are often surprised by their temper.

How long do Jewel Cichlids live?

Jewel Cichlids live 5 or more years with good care. Their hardiness means they persist; the challenge is managing their aggression, not their lifespan.

What do Jewel Cichlids eat?

They are omnivorous carnivores taking pellets, flake, and frozen/live foods like bloodworms and shrimp. Overfeeding is the main diet error; feed measured portions.

Tank size and water parameters

A 40-gallon (150 L) tank suits a pair. Target 72-82°F (22-28°C), pH 6.0-7.5, moderate hardness, zero ammonia and nitrite, nitrate under 20-40 ppm. Provide rock caves; expect fierce territorial defense when breeding.

Common mistakes with Jewel Cichlids

Key errors: mixing with peaceful community fish (they attack, especially breeding); too small a tank for a territorial pair; and being unprepared for their spawning aggression.
