🐑 Valais Blacknose Sheep — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Farm & hobby · 1 varieties mapped

The smiling Swiss sheep with the black knees — Valais Blacknose are wool stars and gentle pets, but still sheep with sheep's rules.

The Valais Blacknose is a Swiss dual-purpose (wool and meat) mountain breed famous for its long, curly white fleece and distinctive black face, ears, knees and feet. Mature rams weigh 70–90 kg and ewes 55–80 kg; they live 10–12 years. They have surged in popularity as 'pet' sheep thanks to their looks and calm temperaments.

Honest framing: beneath the cuteness they are sheep with sheep's non-negotiables — an annual shearing, copper-toxicity sensitivity, parasite management and a flock (never one). They need good pasture, predator protection and a sheep-savvy vet. As livestock they are zoned accordingly, and their valuable fleece is a yearly job, not a bonus.

How long do Valais Blacknose Sheep live?

Valais Blacknose sheep live about 10–12 years. Ewes are bred from around 12–18 months and, after a roughly 147-day gestation, typically lamb singles or twins in spring. They are seasonal breeders (fall mating). Their lifespan and flock dependence mean a small group is a decade-plus commitment with annual shearing and parasite management built in.

What do Valais Blacknose Sheep need?

They need good pasture plus grass hay in winter, a sheep-specific mineral mix — and this is critical: copper is toxic to sheep, so never feed goat, cattle or pig minerals or lamb feeds containing copper. Grain only for late-pregnancy ewes or thin animals on advice. Clean water and a salt source complete the diet. Their long fleece mats if not shorn yearly, and they need parasite control guided by FAMACHA eye-scoring to slow drug resistance.

Valais Blacknose Sheep housing and setup

Provide woven-wire stock fencing with a guardian against dogs, coyotes and foxes (the main predator risk), a three-sided shelter, and well-drained pasture to protect hooves and fleece. Plan at least three sheep — a single Valais is a stressed, bleating animal, and they are flock to the core. Annual shearing (spring) by a professional is mandatory welfare. Local zoning often limits livestock numbers and setbacks; confirm before buying, and note their valuable fleece may require secure housing.

Common mistakes with Valais Blacknose Sheep

Top errors: accidental copper (goat or cattle minerals, or copper-containing feeds, cause fatal hemolytic crisis — read every tag); skipping annual shearing (the long fleece mats, heats and sickens the sheep); keeping one (flock animals decline alone); and set-stocking one paddock (parasite buildup — rotational grazing is the health baseline). Predators left unmanaged take lambs and adults alike.
