🦎 Sailfin Dragon — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Reptiles & amphibians · 1 varieties mapped

The sail-backed river dragon of Southeast Asia — big, bold, and built around a swimming pool.

Sailfin dragons (Hydrosaurus spp.) are 3-4 foot (90-120 cm) semi-aquatic lizards from the Philippines and Indonesia, named for the enormous sail on the male's tail. They are impressive, intelligent display animals for experienced keepers.

The honest scope: they are large, need a tall enclosure with a big, filtered water pool, high humidity and heat, and they are territorial (males cannot be housed together). This is an advanced, space-hungry pet, not a casual one.

How long do Sailfin Dragons live?

Sailfin dragons live 10-15 years in captivity and reach 3-4 feet (90-120 cm), with males larger and bearing the dramatic tail sail; adults can weigh 1-2 kg.

What do Sailfin Dragons eat?

They are omnivores leaning carnivorous: insects (crickets, roaches, grasshoppers), the occasional small fish, plus leafy greens, flowers and fruit. Feed insects daily for juveniles and every other day for adults, dusted with calcium and a D3 multivitamin. Keep fruit as a minority of the diet; avoid processed meats and wild-caught insects.

Sailfin Dragon enclosure setup

Adults need a very large enclosure around 6x3x4 feet (180x90x120 cm) with extensive climbing branches and a large, filtered water pool they can swim in. Maintain 85-95°F (29-35°C) with a basking spot near 100°F (38°C); nights drop to 75°F (24°C). Humidity should be 70-90% with frequent misting. Strong UVB (10-12% T5) is required. A robust filtration system is essential for the pool.

Common mistakes with Sailfin Dragons

Key mistakes: too small an enclosure (they are huge and active), an unfiltered or absent pool (water quality and stress), humidity below 70% (shed and respiratory disease), and housing two males together (severe aggression).
