🐟 Bristlenose Pleco — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Fish & aquatic · 3 varieties mapped

The small sucker-mouth catfish that actually fits a home aquarium.

Bristlenose Plecos (Ancistrus spp.) are about 4-5 inches (10-13 cm), far smaller than the common 'suckermouth' plecos that outgrow tanks, with males sporting bristle-like tentacles on the snout. They are the go-to algae-control catfish for community aquariums.

The honest part: they eat some algae but need real food (wafers, veg) and produce a lot of waste, so they are not a substitute for tank maintenance. They also appreciate driftwood to rasp on.

How long do Bristlenose Plecos live?

Bristlenose Plecos live about 5-12 years with good care. Stable water, driftwood, and a proper diet support a long life; the albino and long-fin morphs share the same care.

What do Bristlenose Plecos eat?

They need algae wafers, sinking pellets, and vegetables like zucchini and spinach; do not rely on tank algae. Overfeeding and a greens-free diet are the usual mistakes, leading to poor condition.

Tank size and water parameters

A 20-gallon (75 L) tank suits one adult. Target 73-81°F (23-27°C), pH 6.5-7.5, moderate hardness, zero ammonia and nitrite, nitrate under 20-30 ppm. Provide driftwood, caves, and smooth surfaces; keep one per tank as adults can be territorial.

Common mistakes with Bristlenose Plecos

Key errors: assuming they clean the tank and skipping maintenance (they add waste); feeding only algae (they need wafers and veg); no driftwood; and keeping several adults in a small tank where they fight.
