How long do Toucans live?
In captivity toucans commonly live 15-20 years, sometimes up to 25 with expert care.
What do Toucans eat?
Feed a low-iron diet dominated by fruit (papaya, melon, berries, mango) plus a specialized toucan/softbill pellet; avoid high-iron foods and never feed avocado, chocolate, or caffeine. Iron overload (hemochromatosis) is a leading killer, so use low-iron formulated diets and limit iron-rich items. Fresh water daily.
Toucan cage and daily life
Toucans need a very large, tall enclosure, ideally at least 6 ft x 4 ft x 4 ft (1.8 x 1.2 x 1.2 m) for one, with branches for hopping (they do not climb like parrots), a heated, humid environment around 75-80F (24-27C), and a shallow pool. Their large bills are delicate; never house with aggressive birds. Keep away from kitchens (Teflon/PTFE fumes are lethal).
Common mistakes with Toucans
The signature mistake is a high-iron diet causing fatal hemochromatosis. Other errors are a cage too small or too cold, fruit-only diets lacking formulated nutrition, and nonstick-fume or toxic-food exposure. Buying one without specialist knowledge usually ends badly.
Beginner mistakes to avoid
- Feeding high-iron foods, causing fatal hemochromatosis (iron-storage disease).
- Housing in a cage too small or too cold for an active, tropical bird.
- Feeding fruit only without a formulated low-iron pellet, causing deficiency.
- Exposing the bird to Teflon/PTFE fumes or toxic foods like avocado and chocolate.
