🐢 Softshell Turtle — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Reptiles & amphibians · 1 varieties mapped

The pancake-shelled speedster — sleek, sand-burrowing, and demanding of pristine water.

Softshell turtles (Apalone spinifera and relatives) are 5-20 inch (13-50 cm) flattened, leathery-shelled aquatic turtles of North America, with females much larger than males. They are active, unusual display turtles.

The honest requirement: they need fine sand substrate (not gravel, which they ingest and abrade on), excellent filtration, and room to swim. They are fast, can bite, and are not handleable — a specialist turtle, not a beginner's.

How long do Softshell Turtles live?

Softshell turtles live 25-50 years and reach 5-20 inches (13-50 cm) shell length depending on sex (females far larger), weighing 1-10+ kg.

What do Softshell Turtles eat?

They are largely carnivorous: fish, invertebrates, aquatic pellets, and crustaceans. Feed adults every other day to 3 times weekly; dust with calcium. Avoid all-meat-only excess (kidney issues) and provide some plant matter. They are active predators and striking feeders.

Softshell Turtle enclosure setup

Adults need a large aquarium or pond (125+ gallons) with a fine sand substrate for burying, powerful filtration, a submersible heater at 75-80°F (24-27°C), and a basking area with a lamp to 85-90°F (29-32°C). Strong UVB is required. Avoid gravel (ingestion and shell abrasion). Provide a secure lid; they are strong and mobile.

Common mistakes with Softshell Turtles

Key errors: gravel substrate (they swallow it and abrade the soft shell), weak filtration (their shells are infection-prone), too-small water volume, and handling (sharp claws and a painful bite).
