🐟 Royal Gramma — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Fish & aquatic · 1 varieties mapped

The purple-front, yellow-back basslet that hides in rockwork and minds its own business.

Royal Grammas (Gramma loreto) are 3-4 inches (8-10 cm), vivid purple at the front fading to yellow at the tail, and a favorite peaceful reef fish. They are shy, retreating into caves, and generally ignore tank mates — a great choice for a community reef.

They need rockwork with holes to claim as territory. They are not aggressive and do well in pairs or singly in a suitably sized tank.

How long do Royal Grammas live?

Royal Grammas live about 5-8 years with good marine care. Stable water and rock shelter support a long, stress-free life.

What do Royal Grammas eat?

They are carnivores taking frozen/live foods like mysis and brine shrimp, plus quality marine pellets. The mistake is only flake; offer meaty foods for color and condition.

Tank size and water parameters

A 30-gallon (115 L) tank suits one, larger for a pair. Target 72-80°F (22-27°C), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, ammonia/nitrite zero, nitrate under ~20 ppm. Provide caves and live rock.

Common mistakes with Royal Grammas

Key errors: an open tank with no caves (they stress without shelter); aggressive tank mates that bully a shy fish; two males in a small space (fight); and poor marine water quality.
