🐟 Upside-down Catfish — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Fish & aquatic · 1 varieties mapped

The topsy-turvy catfish that grazes the surface belly-up on purpose.

Upside-down Catfish (Synodontis nigriventris) are about 3-4 inches (8-10 cm) and famously swim inverted, which lets them scoop food from the water's surface and underside of leaves. They are peaceful, quirky additions to a community tank and do best in a group.

They are generally hardy but need stable water and tank mates that won't harass them. Their upside-down habit is normal, not a sign of illness.

How long do Upside-down Catfish live?

Upside-down Catfish are long-lived, commonly 8 or more years with good care. Stable water and a sensible diet support that lifespan.

What do Upside-down Catfish eat?

They take sinking and floating pellets, flakes, and live/frozen foods like bloodworms and daphnia. Overfeeding is the main diet error; feed moderate portions and include some surface-feeding food.

Tank size and water parameters

A 30-gallon (115 L) tank suits a group of 4-5. Target 73-82°F (23-28°C), pH 6.0-7.5, moderate hardness, zero ammonia and nitrite, nitrate under 20 ppm. Keep in groups of 4+ with plants and a secure lid (they jump).

Common mistakes with Upside-down Catfish

Key errors: keeping one (they are social); boisterous tank mates that stress them; assuming the upside-down posture is sickness (it is normal); and poor water quality.
