How long do Desert Iguanas live?
Desert iguanas live 14-16 years in captivity and reach 16-24 inches (40-60 cm), most of it tail, weighing 100-250 grams as adults.
What do Desert Iguanas eat?
They are herbivores favoring desert flowers, leaves, and greens (dandelion, collard, endive, hibiscus blossoms), with a little fruit and the occasional insect. Feed a daily salad; dust with calcium several times weekly and a D3 multivitamin weekly. Keep protein and high-sugar fruit low — excess protein stresses their kidneys, the main dietary killer.
Desert Iguana enclosure setup
Adults need a 75-gallon or larger terrarium (at least 48x24x24 inches / 120x60x60 cm) with a sandy substrate and basking rocks. Provide a scorching basking spot of 100-110°F (38-43°C), ambient 85-95°F (29-35°C), and a cool end near 80°F (27°C). Strong desert UVB (10-12% T5) is mandatory. Humidity should be low at 20-30% with only a small water bowl.
Common mistakes with Desert Iguanas
Main errors: feeding too much protein or fruit (kidney damage), a basking spot below desert levels (lethargy, poor health), insufficient UVB (MBD), and a tank too small for a 2-foot lizard.
Beginner mistakes to avoid
- Too much animal protein or fruit — kidney disease.
- Basking under 100°F (38°C) — they are built for desert heat.
- Weak or no UVB — metabolic bone disease.
- Enclosure too small — they reach two feet.
