🐢 Sulcata Tortoise — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Reptiles & amphibians · 1 varieties mapped

The 100 kg giant that starts as a ping-pong ball — the ultimate 'cute hatchling' regret.

Sulcata tortoises (Centrochelys sulcata) are the third-largest tortoise in the world, reaching 24-30+ inches (60-80+ cm) and 70-100+ kg, native to the African Sahel. They are kept by experienced keepers with land and resources.

The honest reality: the hatchling is adorable, but it becomes a tractor-sized, decades-long (50-150 year) commitment that destroys landscaping and needs warm outdoor space year-round. They are the classic 'impulse buy, lifelong rehoming' animal — buy the adult size, not the baby.

How long do Sulcata Tortoises live?

Sulcata tortoises live 50-150 years and reach 24-30+ inches (60-80+ cm) shell length, weighing 70-100+ kg as adults.

What do Sulcata Tortoises eat?

They are grazing herbivores: grasses, hay, and high-fiber weeds, with essentially no fruit or protein. Feed a grass/hay-based daily diet; dust with calcium several times weekly (D3 if no sun). Excess fruit, protein, or pellets cause explosive growth, shell deformity, and kidney disease. Fresh water should always be available despite their desert origin.

Sulcata Tortoise enclosure setup

Adults need a large, secure outdoor enclosure (hundreds of square feet) with a heated shelter for cool nights, a basking spot of 95-100°F (35-38°C), and ambient 80-90°F (27-32°C). Strong UVB (10-12% T5) is required. Keep it dry (40-50% humidity). Hatchlings can start in a 4x2 foot indoor pen but outgrow it within 2-3 years — plan the adult space from day one.

Common mistakes with Sulcata Tortoises

Critical errors: underestimating adult size (100 kg giant in a suburban yard), fruit/protein diet (shell and kidney disease), cold/damp (respiratory infection), and no UVB/calcium (metabolic bone disease).
