🐟 Convict Cichlid — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Fish & aquatic · 2 varieties mapped

The tank-breaking parent that breeds whether you want it to or not.

Convict Cichlids (Amatitlania nigrofasciata) are 4-6 inches (10-15 cm), striped black-and-white (males) or pinkish (females), and among the hardiest cichlids. They are also among the most aggressively territorial, especially when breeding — which they do at the drop of a hat.

They are a great 'first cichlid' for learning the hobby's parenting drama, but their aggression means a species tank or very robust tank mates. The pink (white) convict is a popular color morph.

How long do Convict Cichlids live?

Convict Cichlids live about 8-10 years with good care. Their toughness means they outlast many more delicate species.

What do Convict Cichlids eat?

They are unfussy omnivores taking pellets, flake, and frozen/live foods. Overfeeding is the main diet error; feed measured portions once or twice daily.

Tank size and water parameters

A 30-gallon (115 L) tank suits a pair. Target 68-79°F (20-26°C), pH 6.5-7.5, moderate hardness, zero ammonia and nitrite, nitrate under 20-40 ppm. Provide rock caves; expect them to claim and defend a territory fiercely when spawning.

Common mistakes with Convict Cichlids

Key errors: housing with peaceful fish they attack, especially during breeding; too small a tank for a territorial pair; and being unprepared for the dozens of fry they produce repeatedly.
