The care below is flying squirrels-level guidance from our species hub, sourced to Merck Veterinary Manual — Rodents and RSPCA — Small pets. How long do flying squirrels live
Flying squirrels live 10–15 years. They are delicate but long-lived with correct care. Risks: calcium deficiency (they need a balanced exotic diet, not just nuts), loneliness (stress, self-mutilation), and injury from unsafe gliding space. A pair and proper diet carry them for a decade-plus.
Cage and the glide need
Use a tall cage (at least 3–4 ft / 90–120 cm high) with multiple levels, branches, and a nest box for sleeping. They glide — give vertical space and safe landing spots. Soft substrate and chew toys. Escape-proof (they are tiny and quick). A companion of the same sex or a bonded pair prevents loneliness.
