The nocturnal glider — tiny, adorable, and awake exactly when you want to sleep. Not a beginner pet.
Quick answer: Southern flying squirrel is a variety of flying squirrels. Everything on this page is flying squirrels-level guidance — we do not invent variety-specific numbers.
The care below is flying squirrels-level guidance from our species hub, sourced to Merck Veterinary Manual — Rodents and RSPCA — Small pets. It applies to Southern flying squirrel exactly as it applies to every other flying squirrels variety. We do not publish variety-specific temperament, lifespan or weight numbers that we cannot source.
Diet and calcium
Feed a specialized mix: a base of rodent block plus insects, leafy greens, small fruit (sparingly), and a calcium supplement — they are prone to metabolic bone disease on a nut-only diet. Avoid chocolate, avocado, and excess sugar. Fresh water daily. Juveniles need frequent feeding; adults eat morning and night (they are nocturnal).
The nocturnal reality
Be honest about the schedule: flying squirrels are active at night and sleep all day. If you want a daytime interactive pet, this is wrong. They also need a vet who sees exotic small mammals. Legal status varies — confirm your state permits them before committing to a 12-year life.
